About the Lucky Irish Penny This unique penny is a piece of art, a big coin, 1.2 inches in diameter, it weighs almost one ounce and is made of copper (995 copper, 030 tin and .015 zinc). The Irish Harp, the national symbol of Ireland, is on one side and the other side has a hen and two chicks. This penny is becoming scarce. Last minted in 1968, the next mint was the decimal, making this the last year of true Irish coins. The penny attached to this card is in it's original condition after a possible 40 years of use and another 35 years of being stashed somewhere by a collector. It will polish up to a bright copper finish, but we are told by collectors that when a coin is polished, it loses its collector's value. Legends of "The Lucky Irish Penny" One legend says it is returned money given as a gesture when the price of a transaction is agreed on. To this day, the "lucky penny" tradition survives in small farming communities. Another legend is that describedf above that began in the 1800's. Today, belief in the luck of Irish pennies has become universal and is no longer limited to the Irish. IRISH PENNY GIFTS
