EDUCATIONAL ARTICLES

Activities for Children

Find family fun and learning opportunities to learn at every turn. Build upon a child's experiences. Start small and let them learn skills at their own speed. Give them chances to use tools, gradually and encourage repeated use and the development of precision and craftsmanship.

The Arts

Help children develop artistic skills by giving them opportunities to experience the materials of art: crayons, pencils, paints, clay and craft materials. Let them play freestyle and be creative.

Camping

One of the best ways to help a child learn about nature is to immerse them in outdoor activities. Let them hike, camp, observe and explore. They are surrounded by science and their natural curiosity takes over and they start asking questions and seeking answers.

Children's Crafts

Many children enjoy crafts and there are craft ideas throughout this website. Links to some of these articles are available on this children's craft page.

Craft Articles

Find craft articles for all ages.

Cultures Around the World

Explore different cultures. When other cultures are familiar to children the "fear factor" disappears and friendship becomes an option. Help them to embrace, understand and appreciate differences between people. Try foods from different countries. Play games that children play in other places. Go to an import store and read the tags to see where items were made. Globalize children to prepare them for a world that gets closer and smaller in many ways.

History

When it's about people, places and interesting things that happen, history is exciting. Help children to see the fascination instead of thinking in terms of dates and names to memorize. Take them to visit places where history occurred. Learn the history of your own town or area. Read about ancient history, archaeology and more.

Creative Educational Activities

Children are learning everyday, all the time. When we provide opportunities for them to experience a wide variety of places, things, materials, people, and experiences, they learn and enjoy learning. When we sit them down and say, now it's time to do your homework, the learning button sometimes switches to the off position. A child who knows about many different things from direct experience has a sense of confidence that doesn't always come from classroom learning.

MUSIC FUN

Music can add spice to anyone's life. Our children seem to be automatically exposed to whatever the current popular music is, but give them opportunities to listen to and learn to appreciate a wide variety of styles and sounds of music. Sing together. Play instruments. Dance. Make music part of their lives.

Puppets

Puppets can teach children everything from reading to handling emotional situations. Of course making puppets and operating them is a phenomenal experience in the arts and storytelling too. A puppet can be as simple as two dots and a smile drawn on a finger. Many simple materials can be used to make puppets. Use paper plates, paper bags and empty plastic jugs for starters. Puppets can even be friends!

Science Fun

Science can be a blast! Literally! Kids love science when they have the opportunity to get some hands-on playing with it. Dig for buried chicken bones and pretend you are excavating a dinosaur. Build a rocket and send it into the sky. See how strong you can build a bridge with toothpicks. Plant a sweet potato and watch it grow. Look at the stars at night or watch a meteor shower. Invent something using everyday things like wire and string. There's nothing boring going on in science, but without experiences like these, some children find it either boring or intimidating.
