How often do you hear or utter phrases like "That will never work," or "I canıt even draw a straight line," or "I have no idea where to begin with this project"? The fact is that creativity is not just for artists, musicians, and poets. Every one of us has a personal source of inspiration and each of us is capable of profound creativity. *From Ned Herrmann's book,
The Creative Brain

1001 Real Life Questions for Women

A Self-Exploration Workbook to Make You Laugh, Cry, Ponder, Ruminate & Consider

The time: March 2001

The place: my bathroom

One morning I got up and looked at my reflection in the mirror as I brushed my teeth. To my horror, I noticed a pimple on the very tip of my nose, the most inconcealable place possible. Bemoaning the fact that at the age of 33 I still go the occasional zit, I looked up at the mirror again and discovered that I also had not one, but two, gray hairs! No way! Acne is the curse of the young, and gray hair speaks one word to me: OLD. How ironic! I'm not really young anymore, but I certainly am not yet old--and still I had these two antithetical things happening at once. I wondered at that moment how many other women were, that very day, experiencing this same exact age-related concurrence.

Out of that wondering came other questions. And out of those questions came the idea for this book.

First of all, I know this is not the only book of its kind. But it is, as far as I am aware, the first book of its kind written by a woman and geared specifically toward women. This is not to say that men should not read the book or would have no interest in it. The emphasis, though, lies with the universality--or lack thereof--of the experience of being an American woman in the 21st century. Young or old, rich or poor, beautiful or plain--there are facets of womanhood that unite us all. My goal was to examine these common experiences--and, perhaps, to create a dialogue about them.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS

To whom did you last say "I love you"? Do you? To whom do you want to say "I love you"? Why don't you? Who do you wish would say "I love you" to you?

How often do you find yourself agreeing to do things you know you shouldn't do? Don't want to do? Think you want to do when you agree to them, but when it comes time to do them, you (want to) weasel out?

Is your fashion sense more peasant or Prada?

If you could have any job, real or imagined, what would it be?

How often do you take naps? Do you feel rested and renewed afterward -- or even more tired than before? Do you feel guilty about sleeping during the day? Think there must be something more productive you could be doing?

What was your biggest personal accomplishment? Your biggest disappointment? Which of the two had a bigger impact on your life?

Would you say you had a happy childhood? If you could change one thing about it, what would it be?

Do you and your partner ever finish each other's sentences?
