Make a Special T-Shirt that gives Dad or Grandpa a HUG for Father's Day and every day he wears it

Tools and Materials:

Acrylic Paints (acrylic fabric paints work best)

Acrylic paints in squirt bottles with writing tips

large paper plates

Piece of corrugated cardboard a little smaller than the shirt or a purchased T-shirt "paint-board" that fits on the inside of a T-shirt

Plastic wrap

Brayer (A printer's hand-inking roller--optional--a small, smooth drinking glass will work instead)

Paper Towels

For a Father's Day Gift that gives dad, grandpa, or other family guy a hug from everyone, purchase a plain t-shirt and have everyone in the family make handprints on it. We made ours with everyone's hands "thumbs up" so it looked like arms were wrapped around grandpa, giving him a hug.

Use paints designed for use on fabric.

Wash the t-shirt before painting.

Cover the corrugated cardboard piece with plastic-wrap, and place it (or a regular T-shirt paint board) between the front and the back of the shirt so paint doesn't "bleed through" to the other side of the shirt.

Use a variety of colors or just choose a favorite color of Dad's or Grandpa's. If you are using a variety of colors, use a separate plate for each color and do all of one color before moving on to the next color. Acrylic paints have a tendency to dry quickly. Squirt some of the paint onto a paper plate or ceramic flat dish.  Roll the paint out thin with a brayer or or a small juice glass so that the the paint will cover a surface large enough for the hand being printed.

Press the hand of a child or other family member into the paint. Press it down firmly to make sure that it is well covered with a layer of paint. Press the paint-covered hand onto the t-shirt. Press hard to leave a good print. With children, especially small children, press on top of their hand to make sure that the print transfers well to the shirt. Wipe hands immediately, especially little kids' hands and then wash with soap and water. If you use a ceramic plate, the paint will wash off with soap and water.

You can put hands on in any design. A single child can make multiple prints in a pattern, at random or in different colors. Several kids or family members can put prints on as shown in the sample shirt above.

If you like, use the fabric writing pens to add names or a special message or quote to the shirt.

Dad, Grandpa or other recipient can wear his shirt with pride, knowing and showing that he is loved!
