Phoenix:
Hot & Cold
There are times when you might say
that Phoenix, Arizona is a little backward. No, I don't mean behind
the times, we're just the opposite of what you might expect. My
friends in the Northeast wear gloves in the winter, to keep their
hands warm. In Phoenix, I keep a pair handy in the summer. How else
are you going to open a hot door handle, put on a seatbelt with a
metal clasp without a permanent belly brand, turn the key and touch
the steering wheel when it's 110º in the shade? Gloves are the
answer! Summer is also the time of year I keep blankets handy.
Blankets in July prevent third degree thigh burns simply by tossing
a blanket over the car seat. A blanket is essential for covering a
car seat if you are transporting small children. My sweaters come
out in the summer too! Not for our "dry heat", but for the
air conditioning!! Grocery stores, restaurants and theaters here are
so cold, I wear more sweaters in July than I do in December! Now you
see what mean when I say Phoenicians are backward!

Easy-to-Make
A Wild West Bib

Using a washcloth and a western
work handkerchief you can zip-up a cowboy bib in a short time.
Fold the handkerchief in a triangle and insert the washcloth as
shown above. Use a sewing machine to stitch the washcloth in
place. That's it! If you're feeling creative you could
appliqué a sheriff's star or embroider the baby's name on the
bib. Choose any colors you like. These bibs are really absorbent
and BIG so they catch most of the mealtime mess. Best yet, they
are simple to launder--what could be easier to clean than a
washcloth and a handkerchief. The handkerchief ties around
the baby's neck or you could add pieces of Velcro™ for a fast
put-on and take-off.
